GRADING OF WALKS
(National Scheme August 2005 slightly modified Aug 2006)

These are always to be considered along with the mileage when choosing walks.
You can have Easy 10 mile walks or Moderate 5 mile walks!

Easy E

Suitable for everyone who is able bodied and healthy

Walks suitable for everyone unless they have a disability that limits mobility or a specific health problem or are well below average fitness. Mostly along easy paths with good surfaces(may be muddy after wet weather or in winter), perhaps with a few gentle climbs. Very few stiles and no difficult steps. Suitable shoes with good soles designed for rougher walking or trainers, though boots may be worn if preferred. Taken at easy pace.

Leisurely L

Suitable for people with a reasonable level of fitness and a little walking experience

Likely to include unsurfaced narrow country paths which may be muddy or overgrown and obstructions such as stiles, narrow bridges, stepping stones, and steps. Terrain may be hilly with some moderate ascents and descents. Walking boots recommended. Taken at moderate pace, though could include walks which are otherwise E but taken at a moderate or faster pace. Contact leader if in doubt about your fitness. Most traditional ‘ramblers’ are in this group or next category.

Moderate M

Usually less than 500m ascents

Suitable for people with some walking experience and a good level of fitness

As L with some sustained climbs and perhaps walking on open hillsides or moorland. Walking boots recommended. Taken at a moderate pace though could include some walks that would be L but taken at a faster pace. Contact the leader if in doubt about your fitness.

Strenuous S

Usually greater than 500m of ascents.

Suitable for experienced very fit and properly-equipped walkers

Would include walks in rough country and mountains plus all the difficulties of M walks with a few long or lots of short assents. Walking boots essential, plus good outdoor clothing and equipment appropriate to the season, though no technical equipment. Would also include some winter M grade walks and M grade taken at a faster pace. You must contact the leader before the day to ascertain your fitness for the walk.
